1969 RS Back up light question
« on: January 26, 2014, 09:31:25 PM »
If someone wouldn't mind helping me locate this it would help out a lot. My Uncle and I cut out the spot for the Rally Sport back up lights in the tail pan today. We used the template I purchased and test fit the lights and they look great.

Here's where I need help. We need to drill the hole that's located in the trunk area (near tail pan) that the pig tail and gromment goes through. In the AIM manual it shows where the back up lights go and it also shows the back up light assembly and pigtail going through the trunk pan but it does not give a precise location where to cut the hole nor the diameter. If any of you guys with Rally sports wouldn't mind helping me out with pictures and possibly the hole diameter that would be a huge help!

Thanks Tommy

Apparently '69 RS b/u wires were routed a little differently.  Attached are photos from my '69 Z28/RS, for the drivers side and passenger side BU lights.  The holes for the grommet/cable are just to the outer side of the back panel-to-floor reinforcement (in fact there seems to be an indicator - dish out - in the reinforcement bracket at the location of the holes;  the holes are  approx 1" from the rear panel interface.

Thanks for 'making me look', because I found out I have a missing grommet on the drivers side... :)

Gary, now you know why you can smell exhaust from inside the car!   ;)

And thanks for the '69 RS photo.  I learned something today!   :)

Any chance you could measure the diameter of the hole when you get minute? Thanks!

I'm estimating it's a 1/2" dia hole..  but Click can measure his better, since his didn't have a wire going thru it.. (a drill index works well for measuring hole sizes).. :)

PS.  I found an old TC posting that also says 1/2" hole..  (Note:  Holes go on the OUTER side of the brace on each side).
"Jun 15th, 06, 04:37 AM
if you look at the bumper brace that welds to the tailpanel and the trunk floor that the bumper bolts go through you will see a half circle cut into the brace where it sits on the floor. that is where the pigtail wire goes (1/2" hole). you'll have to look at your taillight harness to make sure you pop the hole on the correct side of the brace as they are interchangeable left to right and have the cuttouts on both sides."

Take a piece of string and wrap it around the grommet in the groove and mark it. And do the same for the widest part that sticks out in the trunk above the floor.  Then try the strings on drill bits, you want a drill in between those two measurements :)
