wheel trim rings

just had a set of original rims sandblasted and painted for my 69 z 04D.  Does anyone have any suggestions on installing the trim rings and center caps without cutting up the paint?  my trim rings are original as well with the fingers all the way around.  I thought maybe vaseline might help?

Give the paint lots of time to cure before you install the trims, but I suspect they ARE going to scratch up the paint some, but you won't see it until you remove the trims..

Thought the originals were the 4-clip design, and dealers were later issued with the all-round design to swap over during service, after the first style started falling off everywhere? Or did this change occur by mid-production?
On the original question, I put several laters of clear around the wheel rim, to limit the inevitable scratches from getting through to the argent silver, or even the primer.

It's my impression/understanding also that the 4-clip design were the original ones.   Monte Carlo trim rings in the mid 70's (which looked alike/similar) use the fingers all the way around...

Regarding the design of the trim ring, I think that the clip design was a mid year change over. The original paint Silver Z i bought has the fastening tabs all the way around the trim ring and that car is a 05C car. However, I can't confirm the trim rings are all original. The car has the original spare and wheel in the trunk and the wheel has trim ring marks all the way around the wheel. But still does not confirm my suggestion.

Agreed--I'm actually not reshooting mine ,they still present well and will offer a little character to the car. There are a handful of imperfections I'm purposely leaving--and that's one of them.

After speaking with a judge at the national if I remenber correctly the change of the trim rim happened around Feb 69 because the 4 clip was falling off.  I had him at my house in December and he confirmed I had the correct ones.  04D car.  Paint has cured for 2 weeks now wonder if that is long enough?

I was also instructed NOT to clear coat the rims at all.  Used MP172 balck primer and Deltron 2000 for the silver

My 08C car came with both the 4 clip design, and the fingers all the way around. I have the original spare (which got some use since they used to rotate all 5, you old timers might remember this   ) as well and there were marks from both trim rings. This led me to believe that the 4 clip were still in the parts bin. I have 2 invoices from the original owner of my car in the early 70's where he purchased a couple pairs. I assume at this point the later style was what was sold.
