speedo clips and location
« on: January 04, 2014, 09:50:50 PM »
I am told that there is a speedo clip on the tunnel  ( passenger side) next to tranny and one on the fire wall behind the coil.  both should be silver.  I see 2 on the fire wall, one behind the coil and one about 6 inches towards the heater box, behind the distributor.   I do see in the manual  (M-20 A-9) that they do show total of three, one on tunnel and 2 on firewall.  Which is correcr?  I had my car inspected a short time ago by a legends judge and he says total of 2.  ?????

Thanks. Interesting input... just for those taking their car to legends they expect to see two only.  They are located on the passenger tunnel and behind the coil. This is on a 69z 04D van Nuys build

Does anyone have an installed photo of the speedo clip that's located on the passenger side of the trans tunnel? I need the precise location (measured off the trans tunnel seam?) and the orientation (speedo cable captured / clamped below the drilled hole or above the hole?). Thanks.

Hi Lloyd, just posted this pic on team Camaro for Mike as he is asking the same question. This pic gives some idea but will check my dimensions on my car today and post. This pic is off a good friends 68Z survivor. Unmolested two owner local car. If memory serves me well I believe both his and mine were approximately 4" back from the unibody seam.

Thanks Chick, this is exactly what I'm looking for. We are trying to install a repop clip on Mike's tribute car (where there wasn't one previously) however the trans tunnel clip is also long gone on my survivor and the hole was welded so I can't determine exactly where it was located or the correct orientation for the clip (I have an original to install). Your post answers both questions.  Thanks again!

Isn't there a 'dimple' punched in the metal that was used by the assembly line workers where to drill?

My 1968 measurement is appx 4 to 4.25 from the seam and the clip orientation is the same as the one chick has shown.  If you have the transmission crossmember installed, it is 4.5 from the crossmember to the clip hole.

Here are the dimensions from our 68 which indicate to the centerline of the drilled hole approximately. The distance down is best by looking at where the clip is located compared to the bottom radius but did add a dimension from the top of the tunnel (middle of the radius) to centerline of hole. Also looked at a 69Z and it seemed to be 3" back also and was the same dimension using the tape measure. I still think my friends 68 was 4 inches back but I could be wrong.

Anyone know if the factory used any kind of sealant around the hole (once the clip was installed)?

Tim, dang if I know overall but they surely did not on our 68. Car was taken off the road in 1979 and floor boards, bottom of doors were perfect except for a small area around where that hole had been drilled. One could easily see how the insulation under the carpet was getting wet and had moisture. Only spot among the under carpet sound deadener. And what I can see in the 69Z picture posted earlier (I took out the speedo clip) there were no remnants of any sealant in that hole either. I'm sure experts that do restorations and tear these cars apart would know for sure.
Oh, it's sealed NOW.... :)

Thanks for confirming, Chick. The 69 AIM calls up 'cement' to be applied to clip and hole for the 2 locations on the firewall, but nothing for the lower clip down by the transmission - seems like that'd be the most likely place for water to get in and be retained, so I'm going to do what you did and seal it up!

X2 on sealing up. Great idea. You don't want water getting inside a freshly done car.
