Bellhousing/flywheel/clutch for 67SS/RS350
« on: September 05, 2006, 01:58:16 PM »
I have a 67 and I'm rebuilding the stock, matching numbers engine. Does anyone know the correct bellhousing, starter and clutch part numbers/size? I believe them to be 3899621 bell housing, 3791021 flywheel, 1108338 starter and a 11" clutch. Just want to be sure, cause I have a 3858403 bell housing and it doesn't fit the 8338 starter!

Dan,

yes, the 67 350 used the 11" clutch with the 621 bell housing. The 3791021 flywheel is for the 10.5" clutch though. You need the P/N 3889694 11" flywheel.

Thanks Ed! Is the 3889694 flywheel a 14" flywheel with 168 teeth?

According to my reference book, the 3889694 is a 68 flywheel. The 3998281 shows as a 67 flywheel, but the number for 67 should be lower than the number for 68 I think!

The correct casting number for the flywheel is 3789733. I think the other number is the assembled part number.

Dan,

Flywheels are hard to nail down since there were so many part numbers and casting numbers used over the years. Even the P&A is unreliable since it would only list the "current" Part Number (which for my September, 1968 P&A was 3889694).

Here's a bit more on the 3889694 flywheel on the NCRS WEB SITE. The only thing I can find on the 3998281 is on the TEAM CAMARO WEB SITE and Jonesy shows it as a 69 part.

See what I mean? Flywheels are hard to get right!!

Thanks Ed. I'll take your advise and go with the 388... number. Dan

As a general rule, the 168-tooth flywheels used the staggered-bolt starter, while the smaller ones used the straight bolt pattern. This may help you spot one at a swap meet. Good luck.
