Most likely on the pad.

In the 1969 model year, the partial VIN for V8 engines was stamped in either of two locations: on the engine pad or near the oil filter. The alternator was moved to the passenger side in 1969 which covered the engine stamp pad and caused the VIN stamp to be relocated by the oil filter. The block in this area is raw unmachined casting which makes this stamp difficult to see. The Norwood plant stamped the VIN on the engine pad on early cars and moved the stamp by the oil filter in the December 68 timeframe. Los Angeles was not as consistent and the VIN stamp location varied during the year.

i would do a search on this site putting in "9N55 or 9N56"depending on your vin assuming it is a Nor. Build "L" with corresponding vin start #510-513 for Los A.and that will bring up orphans around the date you are questioning and these will show where partial vin is located. I have a Nor. T1108JH and the vin is on pad. Hope this is of some help.

My 12A L78 has the VIN on the front pad - I'll post a pic right behind this quote. Look closely to the right of the build date stamp, and you can see the VIN under the rust. Sorry it's not clear - it's the only one I have on file. JH and build is clear enough - TT is 12A, non-X coded.

BTW, the other L78 block I have was built 12/15, JH code, VIN is clearly stamped above the oil filter. If I remember correctly, it's a 12C or D car, still exists.

Here's the 12/15 block. Cast date is K-22-8, build 12/15 - I'd hazard a guess that the location change for the VIN took place in the 2nd week of December. The unfortunate thing for me is the missing X code - I can't figure out if my L78 is an X22 or an X66. It was a vinyl top car originally, so it might be an X22 -
