Smog tube question.
« on: August 07, 2006, 06:32:26 PM »
Wondered if someone could confirm for me the finish of the 1969 SB smog tubes.
I had thought in that they were to be Goldcad plated, but I see all the resto houses are selling black ones.

Which is right ???

They had a greenish-brownish-colored coating - don't remember the technical name for it, but it was never used on any other parts as far as I know.

So how do you think I could duplicate that? Should I even try?
Are they plated, or painted, or natural metal, maybe tarnished copper tubing like.

I have a few sets of original tubes that I wanted to refinish to original. ???

John,

I thought the exhaust heat caused the green/brown finish shortly after burn-in.

As an aside, I had Jerry MacNeish restore mine 4 years ago and they came back dull black.
I hope he did mine correctly...... ???

It's a plating. No idea of the name of it. I worked for Rochester Products (carbs, etc) - they had numerous different platings that they used, for different reasons, all slightly different in color.
