Firewall insulation plug
« on: January 13, 2013, 12:37:27 AM »
I noticed on my 69 that I left out one of the plugs that hold the firewall insulation on. The location is up above the brake on the firewall. I have a plug and could not get it to push through the firewall all the way to secure on the engine side of the firewall. I was trying this by myself and maybe it's a two man job. Any secrets on a way to push this through the firewall?

Thanks,

Lawrence

In the middle of the plug is a hole. I took a screw driver that fits the hole and ground a rounded end on it. Press this in to stretch the plug just enough while holding the larger end to get it through the firewall hole.

Short of mike's suggestion (correct way) is to have someone else grab the nub with a pair of pliers and ease it on through.

lubricating the plug might help.   'Wire Ease' is an electrical source 'slippery stuff', which evaporates away.  you might also dip the plug end in go jo.... :)

In the plant, we kept the plugs in a tray on the bench under a heat lamp, and dipped them in a 50-50 solution of water and Joy soap just prior to installing them. The inside guy pushed them, and the outside guy grabbed the tips with duckbill pliers and pulled them to seat them.

They will 'squeeze' the rubber sufficiently to allow pulling it thru, but will not 'cut' the rubber...
