source for 69 Z28 Exhaust Pipes?
« on: November 15, 2012, 04:54:41 PM »
My '69 Z28 has the original pipes over the differential and behind the diff muffler and tail pipes, but I've ran headers since I bought the car in the '70's, and thus had a 'muffler shop' connection from the headers to the differential pipes. Question: Is there a source for *original type* exhaust pipes from the factory exhaust manifolds to the rear section? I think this would consist of the exhaust or header pipes and the resonator section (for my late 09C '69 Z28).   I have the original 'day 2' takeoff exhaust manifolds which I plan to use.
If there is no source, is my only option to have a muffler shop bend up a replacement?

I'm fairly sure Gardners only sells complete systems.

Your car requires the 2nd design tailpipes with chromed tips. When I was in the biz we had a few pair NOS. Be aware one side was discontinued long before the other so one will be easier to locate. There was an excellent repo done a few years ago by Flying A Restoration. I believe someone took over the rights to them.

Muffler shop stuff usually looks home-made.

William,

My tailpipes are correct and have the chrome tips;  I can't recall if these were on the car when I purchased it, of if I bought all that new in the '70's.  I do know I bought some things new; I even bought an almost complete chambered system to put up (and use when I restored the car)...  but of course the chambered is not correct for my car as I now know.

I have everything correct and in good shape except the exhaust pipes and resonators.  Is Gardners the only source for correctly configured exhaust pipes?

Back when..   good muffler shops had cards which told how/where to bend the pipes to duplicate the factory parts...   Don't they still have those cards and do that?

If you're techie, OE exhaust pipes had the resonators welded on.

Probably Gardners has those ancient cards. It would be nearly impossible to fabricate systems from scratch.
