ebay item 160839900523
« on: July 08, 2012, 07:10:34 PM »
I want to buy this car because it has some parts on it that I have been looking for,  however something does not seem right with vin # and trim tag!  I don't want to buy anything that vin# or trim tag have been changed on.  Anybody care to offer there thought on if trim and vin are correct. It is ebay item 160839900523, seller seems to have good feed back.

If you are just buying it for the parts and throwing the rest away, doesn't seem like a big risk. He says bill of sale only, am I missing something here?

The body tag data matches what can be seen-Marina Blue, blue custom interior. However the 12D date on the tag is way off the listed VIN-N101136. That's a very early production VIN and would have an August tag date.

The car could have been stolen and re-tagged 40 years ago. No one noticed.

So to play it safe should he pass on it, because it may have been stolen? I could see if it was a copo or ss or something valuable or worth restoring, seems like very little risk for a rusty 6cy car that he is only using for parts. I could see there being a problem if he wanted to resell it as a complete car, or try to title it, knowing there are some inaccuracies between the trim tag and the vin. I understand not wanting to promote switching tags and all, this just seems like the type of cars you run across when looking for parts donors.

That is why I am not sure about buying it, my thought is it may have been stolen.  It also looks to have had vinly top at one time,  no top color on trim tag, not sure if trim tag has been changed or vin has been changed. allthough it dose not seem like the type of car that someone would change trim tag! If trim tag was changed I would buy it but not vin.

I don't see anything wrong with buying the car, taking what you need, and discarding the rest. And I don't see any liability issues. My opinion is the trim tag is suspicious.

Here's a link to the auction.

He has corrected the VIN. It is 123377N161136, which falls in nicely with the trim tag.

That's not factory vinyl top trim. See how it does not go below the rear window? It was added aftermarket.

I see that now Thank you, I was wondering why sheet metal on roof was not rusted to death, I was thinking other than floors and rear quarters the body wasn't to bad because the roof under the vinyl and around windows was still there,  The car is pretty inexpensive even with including shipping sould be around $2200. to  $2300. any thoughts or is it more rusty than I thiink.

The (what I thought was original) vinyl roof trim and the 230 engine plus powerglide.
