Adjusting Idle Mixtures Screws on Quadrajet
« on: March 06, 2012, 03:10:07 AM »
I think I remember but I need to be reassured how to adjust my Idle mixture. This is my "old school" way. Warm the engine up and turn the screw in til the engine starts to miss. Turn the screw out til it smooths out. Then an additional 1 1/2 turns out. Does this sound about right or am I getting too old to be doing this?  ???  I don't own a vacuum gauge and never have. I own a timing light but don't use it. Always tuned by ear.

Forget the "old school" method - get a vacuum gauge and do it right (same with the timing light - timing mistakes can either leave power, driveability and fuel economy on the table or cause detonation).

Thanks John !! I guess it's off to the parts house for a vacuum gauge.

Yeah it took all the guess work out of it. Got me one of those digital jobs with the built in dwell, RPM, and timing on one screen.
