Front Lower Valance Panel Camaro's
« on: January 20, 2012, 01:59:36 AM »
What  color did the front inside of the lower valance panel on a 69 Z/28 rally sport come painted...Did it match the body color of the car, or was it paint with a primer or black...

I think so for all three years.

I recently went to the Chi town MCACN show and saw the LOW mile 1698 SSRS 350 Red car.
Specifily to take some pics of the RS door sill black out treatment  masking lines, sheen etc. While browsing the car I noticed a LOT of Red paint on the back side of the lower from valance, very good coverage and shiney red (Body color).

Took pic but used a very inexpensive pocket Digi- they did not come out very well. :(

One other off topic notable was the door striker bolts in the jams were PLATED with NO PAINT!

THis is the low mile car formerly owned by Mr. Original.  A Very nice young man now owes the car.

On an original car, the back side of the valance panel would show full coverage of black primer (the front sheet metal was primer flow-coated on all sides and surfaces), with color-coat coverage that varied from full coverage to heavy overspray; the hood, fenders, extensions, header, and valance panel were mounted in car position on a buck during painting that spaced the parts several inches apart so the mating flanges got color coverage, but the back side of the valance panel (and header panel) didn't get direct spray of color; neither did the back side of the hood, fenders, and extensions.

Thanks John..I was told this past weekend that they came painted black but I was not sure...

My car has been restored for about two years now and the inside of the valance panel was painted to match the body color - like quite of few cars are done when painting a restored car.  I show my car in Super Chevy events and they always look at this area since the inside valance panel since it was not buffed to the finish and shine as the car is painted.
I'm going to remove the valance panel and redo it, but this now gives me a delima to ponder..Paint it the correct way,  or paint it match the high gloss finish of the car....

that choice is one of 1) Restored, vs 2) Over-restored....   you choice....
In some judging organizations, you would lose points for 'over restoring'....

I remember reading a thread somewhere that said this piece is the only one on the front clip that got painted body color on the inside. I guess I read too much into and thought it meant full cover with body color.
