Nova Fold Down Rear Seat Fit Camaro?
« on: December 24, 2010, 05:26:38 AM »
I found a 72-73 Nova fold down rear seat in a junkyard.  How close is the Nove fold down rear seat to a Camaro?  Can it be made to fit with a little work.  The width is very close to the standard back seat in my 69 Camaro convertible.  I know the convertibles rear seat was not as wide as the coupe due to the armrest.

However, since I have only seen one fold down rear seat in my life and have really never had a chance to look at them closely, I have no idea if they are interchangeable or not.  I was thinking that since both bodies are very close and the interiors are just about interchangeable, that it may fit my Camaro.  If not, I suppose I will just have to wait until a 69 Camaro fold down rear seat pops up in the junkyard.  I'm sure they get them all the time.

Thanks,

Steve

This is not an answer to your question about the Nova seat but I did see a complete fold down rear seat on eBay the other day. They are on there pretty frequent.  Also I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Merry Christmas

Not to mention C.list and the classifieds at T. Camaro. In the past year I've seen at least a half dozen fold downs for sale. Use this for searching: http://claz.org/

I picked up the back at a swap meet a while back. Haven't put it in, so can't swear I got the right one, but here are measurements taken across the back (trunk) side:
23-1/8" top to bottom, 43-3/8" wide, 6" inches thick at mid-seat (thickest part) along side.

My interchange book shows no matches at all for frame of 67-69 Camaro with folding backrest.  I would have thought firebird frames would be a match, but don't know.

The fold down seat for the Nova didn't show up until 1973 on the hatchback models. It is a totally different design than the first gen Camaro one. As for fitting, I doubt it as it is much narrower than the Camaro fold down seat. Better off spending your money on a correct seat..........RatPack............

I bought it anyway.  It was only $25.  I got the entire seat, the metal backing, and all the brackets, clips, knobs, seatbelts, etc.  I even chiseled off the brackets that were welded to the floor and back panel as well.  Maybe I can make it fit some how.  If not, no big loss.  Also, it wasn't a Nova but actually a 74 GTO.  It looks identical to the Nova except for the Pontiac looking grill and a TA hood scoop.  It is basically a Pontiac Ventura with a Trans Am hood scoop.  I thought maybe someone added the scoop, but that is how it came from the factory new.  I didn't realize just how badly Pontiac slummed out the GTO that badly in its last year...how sad.  Pontiac went from the badass GTO we all knew in from 60's on thru 72.  In 73, they made what looked like a big Bonneville or Grand Prix, and finally, a Ventura in 74.  The last year of the GTO was a sad year.  They should have stopped in 72 and retired the GTO in style.  To go out like that is embarrassing.

The 74 GTO was kinda weak but imagine it with a SD455. It would drop right in.

Didn't they make a factory 455SD GTO in that body style? I would swear I saw one/some back in the day, had a buddy that was a Poncho freak.

They were supposed to build a SD455 GTO but never did. There was a number of SD455 Grand Am's built for the press but all were sent to the crusher when the tests were done.
There was a TV ad showing the rubber nose piece flexing when contacting a wall, the SD455 decal was present under the front fender side marker lamp.

the nova hatchback does not have the rear package tray.  my be an issue may not since they bodies are similar it may be able to work - i think the biggest issue you will have is height where it meets the package tray
