Hydraulic roller cam break in??
« on: December 11, 2010, 03:20:39 AM »
Putting the engine in tomorrow maybe firing it up Sunday if all goes well. I don't remember anything on the cam card about break in. Should I use an additive, do I run it 2k to 2500 for 20 minutes flucuating regularly. Or are roller cams no big deal just crank it and get all my adjustments right.

Thank, Kevin

No break in at all for a roller.  ;)
The whole idea of the fast idle for 30mins with zinc-rich oil is to allow flat tappets to wear an intimate pattern on their relayive lobes while the fast rpm insures plenty of oil splashing on it to keep it cool, lubricate and wash away debris.
A roller eliminates the need for any of that.
Just make sure your temps are up before hard throttle. (as always), but don't be scared of hard throttle as cylinder pressre is fine. Just keep the rpm down for the first 1000 miles then swap oil and filter and you're good to go..
Don't use a synthetic or friction modified oil during this period.
Rechech the torque of all your fasteners after the first few heat/cool cycles -particularly the headers, and you may need to retorque your head gasket depending on brand/type. (check with manufacturer).

Engines in. Lot of cleaning to be done, that my son was suppose to do this week while I was gone. Adjusted the rockers, modified the intake & blast it, bolted up the accessories and dropped it in. Anyway, got it in and bolted up, have to do the radiator, drop the distributor in, run the firing order and such tomorrow and maybe fire it before I go to Atlanta.

OK, its back running and driving, although it has a major hesitiation. It feels like the timing is way retarded or like an accelerator pump not working on a carb. Not much time to tinker with it today, but hopefully tomorrow I will get it worked out. Plan to go backt o the basics and go through all my settings and tune issues.

Good stuff, lets hope it's just the pump shot that needs adjusting.  :)

I ended up having to unplag the MAP sensor and the plug off the EGR to get it to accelerate right. It runs pretty sweet right now but you can just feel the restriction. I am going to do some further research to see what I need to do with this set up to get everything hooked back up and functioning if possible and them the next mods in a few months. Here are the links to the parts I intend to use. I am still unclear on which headers to use.
