I have a 1968 Camaro SS/RS Convertible, 350 ci with Powerglide that I'm restoring to concourse level for the 2011 GM Nationals Legends Class. However, I'm having difficulties finding out what is the correct original ignition coil for my car, a 238 or a 293.
According to Group 2.170 in two different GM parts catalogues, the correct coil for 1968 V8 engines is 1115238: "1967-69 Camaro Master Parts Catalogue" (dated July 1, 1969) and the "1967-73 Camaro Parts Catalogue No. 731a" (dated Dec 1972). Neither catalogue even mentions the 293 coil for any model year or engine size. However, the only version of coil that I seem to ever see for my model year and engine, both NOS and in reproduction, is the 293 coil.
I saw an NOS 1115238 sell on eBay on Nov 29, 2010 for $159.50 (eBay Item No. 320621135466). It had the original Delco-Remy box with it and the box was labeled "1115238 Coil" and "#D512." Embossed on the bottom front of the can was "238" and "B-R." I have not been able to find a source that sells a reproduction 238 coil, but know it exists, because I've recently seen a picture of one next to a GM Reproduction Parts box.
If either Larry Christensen or Jerry MacNeish could let me know which ignition coil is correct for Legends, then I'll go with it.
