1968 A.I.R Smog Pump Part Number
« on: March 19, 2010, 09:56:25 PM »
Can anyone verify the smog pump part number for my 1968 L6 manual transmission car? I have seen listed 7802609, but it wasn't from the GM parts book.
If anyone has the same engine, I would really appreciate seeing pictures of the setup. Thanks, Joe.

That part number is from the assembly manual and does not show up on the actual pump. The pump used is the standard pump with the white fan. The casting number of the back cast iron piece is 7801149. There is no relief valve on top either. I believe this pump was used from 1968-1972.

There's a jungle of part numbers out there; if anyone has a smog pump for an L6 date coded early 1968, could you please tell which part numbers are on it; I think there's a part number for the main case and another on the rear casting.

As factory installed, was the smog pump pulley 3927116 on the 1968 L6 painted black or unpainted or did it have a special finish?

I have 3 68 pulleys. 2 are not painted and the third is only painted on the front side. These were from junk yards and the swap meets. I believe the 68 pulleys were plated gray phosphate. The 68 pulley stamping is on the pump side of the pulley in an arc closer to the outer edge of the pulley. The 69 pulley is on the flatter side of the pulley in a straight line starting near one of the bolt holes. The 68 pulley does not have the AU code but the 69 does. I hope this helps.

If the smog pump part number 7802609 is in the A.I.M., then that should be the original part number when the cars were made, which is the number I'm after. The revised parts manuals show several later numbers. Can anyone who has a 1968 parts book verify that 7802609 is the part number of the smog pump as installed at the factory? If it isn't, what is the correct number? Thanks.

The problem with the part number from the A.I.M. is that it is not on the finished pump.

I can tell you that the correct pump has the rear cast piece that I previously mentioned. It has a casting date, julian date only without the year. The 4 bolts that hold the rear cast piece to the aluminum body have WB head markings for 68 pumps. The date code format is jjjy1Z where jjj is the julian date of assembly and the y is the year of assembly (7 or 8). I'm not sure what else I can add to this. 7802609 is what is in the A.I.M. for the L6 and standard V-8.

Oops. I'm more familiar with the 69 and later 116 pulleys. Those are normally black.

In 68 and 69, the AIR system was installed on all L6 cars with manual transmissions, all small blocks with manual transmissions, and all Camaros with big blocks.
