my new 1968 Z/28
« on: April 10, 2010, 04:56:01 AM »
I got my 1968 Z/28 home that I bought in December. It has been a long time coming but it is home! I know I got a project on my hands but I have always wanted a La Mans blue 68 or 69 Z/28.  Enjoy the link! to the photos.

I think it's in pretty good shape.  Does it have the original engine?  The thermostat housing you have in the picture shouldn't be right for 68.  Was it a late production car?

Very Cool!  Reminds me of my first Camaro.  68 Lemans Blue, blue interior, white stripes car.  The one that got away.
Also, I noticed the dealer emblem in the trunk, Slayton, TX.  Just up the road about 100 miles.

Good luck with the restoration.

Slaton is up the road 110 miles for me.

Yes the thermostat housing is not right...should be a cast iron one.  The bracket attached to the alternator is actually the smog pump bracket....the alternator was actually mounted on the driver side of the engine.  The smog pump was mounted on the passenger side of the engine.

BTW....if you need any info on the 68Z let me know....I have an original one for reference.....see my signature.

Thanks for everyone's comments. I was not sure about the thermostat housing being original to the car but I wanted to photo everything I had for reference. Nice to know about the bracket for the smog pump, I didn't think it looked right for the alternator but it was all bolted together so I left it that way.

68Zproject,  Unfortunately it doesn't have the original engine, it is the one missing piece. So I will be looking for date code correct engine parts for it. The story I was told was that the car was street raced in the 70's and the original engine was blown up then. I do however have the contact name of the second owner who was the person who blew up the engine so maybe if I'm real lucky he will have some info of its where abouts. However since the car was taken off the road in 1979 when the engine was blown I don't have a lot of hope.

Sonet thanks and I will be in touch because I want this car as correct as I can get it.

VERY VERY nice find. I am partial to Lemans Blue with Blue guts as I had a 68 RS/SS 396 like that...

You have a very good basis for doing a nice resto as the car really is unmolested, if you go slow you should be able to find all the assembly line grease pencil writing and inspection marks.

You may also be glad to know that the different colors of blue on the interior pieces are perfectly normal. They didn't match when they were new. Some guys like stuff to match, some like it original... I prefer the later.
