302 with close ratio steering box, finding right headers?
« on: December 02, 2009, 07:03:17 PM »
Hey Guys,
I am attempting to restore a 69 z28. I have the 302 motor with the close ratio steering box. I would like to put headers on my car. Do any of you have any advise to which set of headers to buy and where to get them from. I have talked to Dave headman headers and he said they do not make any to fit!?! He also said that any set that I bought would need to have some major adjustments made to them and that another problem is burning the wires off of the spark plug of cylinder #3. I was wondering what you guys have on your cars. Thanks in a BUNCH!!!

Hooker SuperComps fit fine. Had them for years. Jegs or Summit.

The steering box has nothing to do with fitment of headers currently on the market.  I also have hooker super comps on my '69 with a 302. I previously ('80's) owned a '67 with a sbc and ran hedmans also no issues. I have read the tri-y is a better design for the sbc. If I were to buy a new set it would probably be Dougs or Thorleys tri-y's. Use to be Doug Thorley 'til doug and his wife divorced and split the company.  The Thorley seems to be thicker 14ga vs 16ga.

Actually it seems the Thorley 376 won't fit. Both Companies put out a 375 which should work in a '69 Z, tri-y's won't work with a powerglide.

i have hooker super comps too on angle plug 2.02's and they fit pretty good. the angle plug part is a bit of a problem  ;) but what ever brand you do get make sure there ceramic coated...that stuff is the cats meow! just dont leave oil on ceramic headers ..it will stain them when it gets hot.
