1968 Powerglide same for 6cyl.-8cyl.?
« on: October 08, 2009, 03:36:46 PM »
Hello. I'm looking for a correct P.G. trans for my 68 rs/ss L48. Was the same tranny used in the 6 cylinder cars as well in 68? What numbers should I look for?

Thanks

Each engine had its own version of the Powerglide - even the two six-cylinders had different transmissions. There were at least five Powerglides in '68, and the L48 version was 3919327; unfortunately, that part number doesn't appear anywhere on the case. The converter was part of the production transmission assembly as-shipped, and unique converters would generate a unique transmission part number.

There may have been a 2-character broadcast code ink-stamped on the case, but I don't have the codes.

Thanks John for the info. It does not look like it will be easy for me to find one, well, the correct one that is. Anything you can suggest? Do you happen to know the length of a L48 Powerglide?

Thanks Again.

The dimensions of all the Camaro powerglides were the same. It was just internal changes, mainly the torque converter and maybe the valve body.

Thanks Kurt. The reason I asked about the length is because I wonder if a Chevelle or Nova Powerglide had the same length.

I have a 1968 Impala powerglide 327 250 HP. I expect it is close. Is that the same?

I understand from my racing friends that the 6cyl. versions had a lower 1st gear. This is likely one of the internal differences. I don't know for certain.

Since all powerglides are the same length and don't have stamped part numbers you have a lot of options, not just Chevelle and Nova. For example my 1967 truck originally came with a powerglide. If you find the right year and get a v8 version you are probably in the ballpark. The VIN stamp will not match.

Thanks Tim. Makes sense, the 6cyl. probably had the 1.82 gear set and the 8 cyl. had the 1.76. If I could find the overall length then I could try to match one up. I know they came with several different tail housing lengths so I am trying to narrow down the ones that will fit a Camaro.

There were two main versions of the powerglide in 68 for Camaro:
L6 and 327/210 - 1.82 first
L30 and SS350 - 1.76 first

Nova housings should be the same as Camaro. Not sure on the others.
