302 bellhousing and starter not fitting??

Hello,
I am restoring a z69 with a 302 engine. I have a 3899621 bellhousing which should be the original to the car. I have a starter number 3664s which SHOULD fix this car. When I try to place the starter on the car the nose of the starter will NOT fit into the Bellhousing. I must be doing something wrong but, I can not figure it out. Has anyone else had this problem???  What starter have/do you guys use on your 302s or is this the wrong bellhousing?? Thanks for your help!!

My Z has a 3858403 bellhousing.  Which is correct for a 10.5 clutch   The 621 I believe is for a 11 inch clutch.  The starter should be a 1108367 for a Z.

The "621" bellhousing, 11"clutch, and 14" flywheel setup you have is not correct for a Z/28.

The "403" bellhousing, 12.75" flywheel and 10.5" clutch setup is correct. You can use the "621" but the starter nose cone, flywheel and clutch will ALL be different.

Try a BB nose cone if you dont want to go find the correct "403" setup. You can not mix-and-match these setups - ALL of the parts listed will need to match one setup or the other setup. Been there, done that.  Even the starter brace would be different. None of the parts you have will be technicaly correct except for the non-fitting starter.

If it was mine, I  would sell the "621" for good money and find the cheaper and more plentiful "403" bellhousing, flywheel, clutch and use the starter you have so you don't have a "MUTT" car later on down the road.

I agree with Stingr69. I just recently sold a 621 for $250. You can buy good 403's for $100.
If you are rebuilding the 302, I would do it right regarding the B/H and starter.

The "621" was used on a few 350's and many big block muscle cars. They are more rare and desireable so they go for more $$$. The "403" was used on MANY applications and should sell for consideably less $$$.

I may be a bit out of touch but I would try to pay $50 for a "403" and about $150 for a "621" if I purchased them locally. Ebay will probably go for more.

The 621 is the "large" bellhousing, and accommodates a 14" 168-tooth flywheel and 11" clutch, as used on big-block cars (which also requires a starter nose with offset mounting bolts). The 403 is the "small" bellhousing, which only accommodates the 12-3/4" flywheel and 10.5" clutch, and uses the starter nose with the attaching bolts directly opposite each other.
