new camaro weight
« on: May 21, 2009, 03:16:11 AM »
why does the thing weigh 3859 lbs. a 1967 chevelle ss 396 weighs 3800 lbs and has a 115 inch wheel basei thought with cars being made out of aluminum and plastic  would be light.where is the weight coming from in new cars.i weighed my 68 rsss 396 car the other day and it weighed 3444 lbs and its made of real metal.and also the new camaro has an all aluminum engine why is the car so heavy ?and why did chevrolet change the wheel base to 112 from 108?if the new camaro had the same wheelbase and weight as the 1st gens the thing would be unstoppible as far as performance. i guess chevrolet cant let a camaro outrun the corvette is the only answer i could come up with.any thoughts or opinions ?

it's the culmination of small stuff ! airbags, 3-4 computers, power everything and the wiring to support it,bigger wheels and tires, ac, cushy interior, insulation through out, big 4 wheel disc brakes and on and on. Had a similiar thought when I scaled my f-150 supercrew (5500lbs), that started me think about where the weight comes from considering the amount of plastic, composites and aluminum used today.

The biggest single contributor is body structure (steel) to manage crush zones, front impact, front offset impact, side impact, rear impact, fuel tank protection, and rollover; 1st-gens didn't have to meet ANY of those regulatory requirements.

Besides it has a better weight distribution and drag coefficient.

One interesting point is that althought the wieght for size may seem a bit higher, competitors have the same challenge withe adding technology and safety.
This of course depends on options and setup, but when looking at comparable models:
The challenger is 300 pounds heavier while the mustang is 300 pounds lighter.

4041 lbs for the R/T
