Chevrolet Assembly Line sequence Numbers
« on: February 24, 2009, 08:45:13 PM »
After reading John Z's article on the Camaro assembly process, I understand that the cars were locked in the assembly line numerically by the "sequence number". In looking at the example of a broadcast copy from Jerry M's book, I see the sequence number is 3 digits, 600 and something. Were the sequence numbers for a given day's production?, ie, reset every day at 1, and continuing up to 912 each day? Then reset the next day? I also noticed there was a box for the date on the example broadcast copy, but it was left blank.

I know for LA plant, the Body Schedule # was reset to 1 each day and the letter that pre-fixed it changed for each day of the production month.  Might want to see this report also:

Is this artical from JerryM. on line ? I would like to read it. I would like to find the LAST 67 made or the last 69 made. Would the 69 be dated in 70 do to strike?

No strike in 69.  69 production went long because of body fitment problems with the new 70 body style.  Last 69 from Norwood is dated 11A and has a VIN of 711922.  Last known car is 22 before the end of production.

Last Norwood 67 is 254698, last LA built 67 is 165008.

If there was no strike - what is the reasoning behind the 06A date for several weeks in 69?

Someone forgot to change the code on the computer cards that equated to the build week for the June codes.  You don't really think someone typed each of those in by hand do you?

Always heard rumors there was a strike in 68?  Any truth to that and if so anyone one when & how long & did the plant just shut down?

In 69 there was one strike at the Los Angeles assembly plant that basically ended 69 production there.  It started April 19th and ended in Mid June.  They only reopened the plant to clear the cars that were actually on the line at the begining of the strike, which was about 1200 Camaros, plus probably the same amount of Chevrolets, and Impalas.  There were various stikes in other GM associated plants thru out the years.  Muncie was on strike for a while, but I don't think there were any strikes at Norwood or LA (besides the one above) from 66 to 70.

The car mags back then *talked* about a strike affecting production and changeover...  I may still have some of those old mags...?

Since all of the ar mags are in Calif, I suppose they were referring to the VN strike and associating the late model change over to that strike (rightly or wrongly)....
