69 camaro BB 4 speed shifter mount
« on: April 28, 2009, 03:00:19 PM »
What is special about the original BB shifter bracket VS a competition plus plate bolted to the tail shaft?  Does the stock bracket bring the shifter back left an inch because the trans got moved to the right an inch?  Or is the placement the same as the competition plus bracket?

The stock big-block adapter plate for mounting the OEM Hurst shifter moves the shifter outboard (compared to the narrower small-block adapter plate) to compensate for the BB engine/transmission relocation to the right 1". I'm not familiar with the aftermarket Hurst Competition-Plus shifter mounting.

The BB shifter is also farther back than the sb. All 4 rods are longer.

The BB mount plate locates the shifter 1/2 inch to the dr side and 3/8 inch to the rear compared to the SB mt plate. The OEM mt plates both have a slot to adjust the shifter location forward and back.

The Hurst aftermarket mt plate is same for BB and SB and is a more solid design thick steel plate with a spacer plate but does not have the slot to provide the adjustment.

here is a thread where I posted pictures of the two OEM mt plates

The original '69 Camaro/Firebird aftermarket Hurst install kit reused the original GM mounting plate per the instructions. It is one of the few cars out there where Hurst did not use the common universal plate they provided with all the other install kits.

If you buy a current production Hurst aftermarket install kit for this application, it will have a 2-piece Hurst provided mounting plate setup from the ones I have seen. It is a one year only Camaro/Firebird only situation. You have to use these special pieces of the shifter will be in the wrong place and won't fit the console.
