Goodmark SS Hood
« on: October 13, 2008, 12:41:03 AM »
I am in the market for a good stock ss hood and heard the quality of the goodmark hood is great.  A dealer told me side by side he could not tell the difference. I was wondering if anyone had any luck with a goodmark SS hood and if there was a noticable difference. I know for the price it is tempting to try!

I don't have much info about the Goodmark Camaro SS hoods, but my dad has one on order.  I will update
you once it arrives and we look it over.

I did buy one for my 67 Chevelle SS and I was impressed.  Very good quality on the one I got.

I have purchased several of the first gen Camaro hoods over the years.  When you say SS, do you mean the cowl induction hood or the hood with the raised fake vent stacks?  I have purchased both and over the years, they have gotten to the point where they are as good if not better than the original hood.  The earlier hoods did not line up as nice as the corners at the cowl did not match up very well as far as the contours matching.  The last few hoods that I have gotten seemed to have improved greatly.  The hoods I have gotten were the Goodmark ones with the GM sticker on them.  As long as your fenders, cowl panel and header have been lined up nicely, these hoods will fit just about perfectly.  Hope this helps.  If you have any other questions, please ask.

*Make sure you get one that was recently manufactured. 4 years ago I did a 67 for a customer who bought a Gdmark hood. The crown was wrong. I had to block the sides and jack the center down at the peak to correct. As expected the top buckled a bit but fortunately hoods are easy to block. Why? He wanted me to and paid accordingly.

*L78 steve: I am presently doing an L-78 Nova with a good SS hood. I've become aware that correct louver support tabs can be purchased to convert a standard hood. Outside of that, the design simplicity between the two remains unchanged.

As I am also looking for a GM SS Camaro hood I am interested in the fit of the new repo ones also.

I have 2 junk Nova SS hoods with good louver tabs so I can convert a standard hood .The problem is I cant find one of those either .It should be a simple item giving all the race car build-ups in my region .Do you know if the Goodmark is good enough for a car like a super clean L/78? I hope I don't get kicked of this forum for talking Nova .

i cannot say how well the Nova hoods fit. As stated, I want to know how well the new  Camaro repos fit as well. I can tell you this. We ended up throwing the Nova repo fenders out that came w/ the car. I repaired the GM ones with lower parts cut from those worthless pieces of scrap. It would appear that the latest, higher quality Camaro repos are better. I'm not yet updated on Nova parts. Helping a friend restore one on spec. NC? I might have one but shipping will smoke your wallet.

I used Goodmark body parts on my '68 and I was not impressed. 2 new fenders, 2 new doors, a header panel and deck lid. Their own fenders did not fit their doors, either along the bodylines or the width of the gaps between the doors and fenders. One fender had the eyebrow welded too far closed and the headlight door would not fit. The doors had the window regulator adjustment slots punched over 1" off. The attachment holes in the header panel for the grille were off. The deck lid did not fit the quarter panels. I'm not sour on Goodmark--I'm just saying aftermarket stuff is not going to be genuine GM. You take your chances!  Good luck!

I picked up a new Goodmark 67-69 Camaro SS hood today that will go on my father's car over the winter.
I was very impressed with how it looked, but as of right now I can't comment on how it fits, because it
has not been bolted on yet.

I have an OLDER Goodmark cowl hood on my 68.  It fits OK, but not great.  I think the quality has improved
over the years.  The SS hood I put on my 67 Chevelle fit well - with original fenders.

Try to find a local Goodmark dealer and buy from them.  Sometimes you won't have to pay the shipping
charges if they are putting in a big order or if they order on a regular basis.  That can help keep the cost
down.  I paid under 300, including tax.  That price did not include the louvers.

I have to agree with HOTROD68.  My 69 had 1/4s, rear outer wheel houses & deck lid  replaced with GoodMark parts within the last year.  We made them work but WOW! what a job to make them fit. Also the right front fender was replaced with a GoodMark part...odly enough it actually fit better than the stock left side on reassembly.  There's not much choice in buying parts unless you have deep pockets for NOS, if you can find them.   I also think GoodMark does try to improve on their sheetmetal as time goes on.

I am building a coupe and the only original sheetmetal on the entire car is the window posts.  Every single panel is goodmark except the door skins, which are NOS GM.  Also, the Goodmark stuff had the GM certified sticker on them, which from what I can tell, only means that GM got some royalty money, as they sure as hell didn't verify that the panels were even close to GM's specs for the original sheetmetal.  I understand that the original GM stuff back in 67-69 did not fit all that good to begin with, but the repro stuff is still not as good as NOS.  How is it 40 years later, with all of our technology and advancements, we can not duplicate the original crappy quality and went backwards on the fitment?  On my 68, I went through several fenders before I got a pair that were the same size.  I learned the hard way after installing all of my front end sheetmetal on my 68 that the length of the fenders were over a 1/4" different.  It all looked good until I tried to install the hood.  I had a rombus opening for a square hood.  Thankfully, the guy I bought my stuff from was close by and I did not have to deal with expensive shipping to get a matching pair.  He even took my one fender back after I had already primed and painted the jambs.  He then let me sift through his inventory of fenders until I got one that was workable.  For that I will give an A+ for service to Danny at Muscle Express in Jupiter Florida.  As for my newer project, my 69 is, like I said, all new sheetmetal.  With a little (okay...a lot) or work shoving, moving, shimming, and using a big ass sledge, I got everything to line up pretty darn good.  I even had to beat the firewall in at the top corner to get the passenger fender to go back another 1/8'.  The only major problem I have to deal with is the rockers do not line up with the fenders very well.  The curve of the door and fender are in line but as soon as I get to the rocker, the curves no longer match.  A skim coat of bondo will fix it well enough.  If you are prepared to do a lot of finessing you can make the newer repro stuff fit well enough for any car show.  Of course, if you are going for the concours level, than NOS is the way to go.  But to be honest, I have seen some supposedly all original unrestored sheetmetal cars and cars supposedly redone with all NOS stuff and installed by "experts" and I have seen some pretty bad fitment issues and gaps.  When I go to the high end car shows or when I went to Barrett Jackson and checked out the 6 figure first gens, I was surprised to see panels lined up no better or even worse than what I have done with my own hands in my garage.
