Obviously an MO coded 302 engine, a Muncie Aluminum cased transmission, a 12 bolt rear axle with gears higher than 3.55 (3.73 is by far most common), 4 leaf rear springs. front disc brakes, 15 inch wheels.  Thats about it, but you need to be able to tell that those things are original to the car, or have been added over time.  Look at the codes on everything and make sure they all go together, look for original tire stickers on the glove box door, tag on the radiator, codes on the alternator etc.

Thanks Mark, He sent me a reply saying the motor is a 302 and it matches the vin # he has the original tranny but not the original rear end. I will look for the date codes and other items you had mentioned, Thanks

We also have a definitive Camaro fact book that deals with nothing but 67 and 68 Z28s.  Here's a link for you.  Now in a new 4th edition and tons of photos and details.

There are too many fakes around. If possible post photos of engine stamping, trim tag, etc on this site.  The experts will let you know if they are correct. Also look for the partial vin. More info: http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml

Good luck!

Hi Jerry, I'm glad you chimed in here. Your name popped up during my conversation with the seller about this particular 68 Z. He stated that this car is photographed in one of your books. Let me relay our conversation to you and maybe you can give me an idea or opinion about purchasing this car. This car was bought out east and the original owner did not like the cars performance after he bought it. So he traded the car back in to the original dealer. While the dealer had it on the lot it got stolen. The car was recovered and somehow there was an accident in transport. The rear of the car was damaged as well as the diff. They repaired the car body and replaced the rear end. The original seats and wheels had been stolen and replaced with 69 seats and wheels from the dealer. This eventually was all revealed to the second owner. This owner was into road racing and took out the original motor and trans and stored it away. He somewhat mini tubbed it but repaired it with fiberglass after he was done with road racing. He put the original 302 back in and kept the original tranny in storage. This car came with a plenum air cleaner and a rear window defogger. It is a corvette bronze color with Z28 stripes and a rear spoiler. I've included the craigslist posting with my original CRG post here. The numbers matching 302 has 44k original miles on it. Do you know this car and what is your opinion on purchasing it. Thanks, John

If this car has most of the original components and not reproduction parts, and the drive train is real, it's a good deal.  Any pedigree drive train Z28 is worth at least $40-45K.
