1969 COPO Camaro Muncie Transmissions
« on: June 23, 2008, 08:51:31 PM »
I've read that COPO Camaros came with any one of the three Muncie transmissions.  However, I've never actually seen or heard of anything but a M22 in them.  As my friend says "There's now more '69 Camaros out there with M22s than Chevy actually built...."

I just was wondering if anyone out there has seen, heard or driven one with an M20 or M21.  I have a COPO engine that I was going to run in a Camaro with an M20 trans with a 4.10 rear, and I'm just wondering what this will be like and if it's advisable.

All 1969 Yenko's 4spd cars were M21's. I believe a few COPO's came with M20's and of course M22's.

Huh?

All 4-speed Yenkos had M21s as did all of Fred Gibb's 4-speed ZL-1s. I have copies of factory docs for several other COPOs; 6 M21s and 1 M20. There are a few M22s but most seem to be M21s.

Oh wow, so most were actually M21s?  I had no idea.  It seems like most every one I see (clones or real) seem to have an M22.  Nice to see that I actually could run a M20 without it exploding or something.  haha.  I doubt I'll drag the car much, so I'm guessing it'll be ok.

Just curious, where were you able to obtain the COPO build info?  Pretty cool....

Bill is correct, all three Muncies were available in these models.  And the M20 is the best for street performance.  CHP documented this at the track making back to back runs years ago.

Excellent.  That's good to hear.  Is there anywhere I can read the test?

I'm definitely considering running it with the 3.73 rear that is currently in the car, which should make it even more streetable.
