9561 Exhaust System Choices
« on: January 11, 2008, 06:57:52 PM »
Seems to me (after some research) that for the 1969 9561 COPO, one really had only 2 choices of exhaust systems.  Either the Chambered Dual Exhaust or the Deep Tone Dual Exhaust with a single muffler in front of the trunk.  Ordering a dual exhaust with dual resinators does seem to have been an option.  Is this true, or am I just making this up?

The only exhaust option until May 1969 was NC8 chambered dual exhaust. It is a lousy choice as it essentially has 4 mufflers, small tubing and lots of bends. On a ZL-1 dyno test it cost 80 hp. It does sound neat-for a while.

For 69 there was no deep-tone dual exhaust option. All Z/28s and L34/L78 cars had NC8 as standard equipment until November 1968 when Chevrolet no longer included it as standard equipment due to noise complaints. At that point those cars were built with standard dual exhaust; one transverse muffler w/o resonators. At some point later in production at least bbs received resonators-the under car photos of the #3 ZL-1 [02D] show it was built with the muffler/resonator system. Later COPOs are known to have been built without resonators. NC8 remained optional until the famous May 69 Central Offfice letter announcing the addition of chrome tailpipes and the deletion of NC8 as an option. As an option NC8 is rare; only 1,526 produced. NC8 was never built with chrome tailpipes.

A COPO built before early May could have had any of the three systems. After early May they likely all had the muffler/resonator system with chrome tail pipes.
