Rear brake line flex hose mounting bracket
« on: December 28, 2007, 02:23:01 PM »
I have a 69 in which it had a 8.2 rear end with mono leafs.  I am replacing the rear with a 12 bolt multi leaf rear end.  My question is, is the mounting bracket for the rear flex brake line hose that attaches to the differential different?  If they are different where might I find one and what part number would I be looking at?  My existing bracket doesn't come close to any of the differential holes.  Thanks

That brake hose bracket was unique to the 12-bolt axle. In the Non-Illustrated Parts sheet (L-48, sheet A2), it shows that the bracket was unique, but attached in the same manner as the bracket for the standard axle. Maybe Ed or someone else can dig up the part number.

Actually, the P&A shows two brackets for the 12 bolt axles (not including the disk brake 12 bolt):

Group 4.681

69 Nova, Camaro (SS) with P.G. or T.H 350 - 3954381
69 Nova, Camaro (SS and 302) exc P.G. or T.H. 350 - 3954382

Rick's shows a 1969 bracket (BR-8, but I have no idea if it's correct for either of the 12 bolts shown above.

The 69 assembly manual, the section covering the std. and HD Rear Axle Brake Pipes, page 65, calls out this bracket as P/N-3954381. Below is a picture for reference.  It also shows another clip P/N-3956700 securing the RH pipe at the first cover bolt just past the 12:00 position.  As attached a pic.  These two items were original on my 69Z.  Bracket 3954381 was not painted, rusty and pitted.  I ordered a repro #BR-8 from Rick's 1st Generatation, now priced at $15.99.

You may also need the bracket P/N-3953281, that holds the flex hose to the underside of the body, at the point where the flex hose interfaces with the steel line hose. Ref. Rick's 1st Gen. #BR-35, $25.99.

Its been noted that Rick's 1st Gen has changed hands and prices have taken quite a jump.  You can visit: www.rickscamaros.com, or contact them at 800-359-7717.

JohnZ....are these bracket not common among all 69's?

Here is a picture of the clip I mentioned.

Good luck with your project!

Thanks for the pics.  I was looking for information on the bracket that mounts the flex brake line to the differential.  In changing from my 8.2 rear to a 12 bolt, my old mounting bracket from the flex hose does not work I also have the metal strap as shown in your last pic.  Your second to the last pic, is that from the front of the car hard line back to the flex hose?  I am waiting for my part from NPD.  Have used Rick's in the past, but have seen a lot of posts on their issues.  Just trying someone new.  Thanks again.

The 3954381 bracket shown in View "A" (UPC 5, Sheet B3) is for the standard 10-bolt axle; the one for the 12-bolt axle is called out in section L48, Sheet A2, in UPC 5F, with the note to see the Parts List or Bill of Material for the part number. I'd guess it's the 3954382 Ed noted in the P&A - the 4381 called out in the P&A for SS with Powerglide is for the standard 10-bolt axle used in that application.

tgifford5,

The second pic of the 4381 bracket is the one that attaches to the differential, to secure the rear flex line.  However, I could be wrong on this bracket if you need a correct, original bracket for an accurate restoration.

John,

Can you post a picture of your original bracket?

Do you know who makes correct reproductions of this bracket?

Thanks,

Dave

The bracket that mounts the flex hose on a 10-bolt extends further over towards the LH (driver's side) than does the one for the 12-bolt.

It places the hose in essentially the same place on the axle, but differs in the mounting bolt location.

First pic is 10-bolt, 2nd is 12-bolt.

RamAirDave,

Great pics...thanks.

tgifford5,

The pic that RamAirDave shows for the 12-bolt looks identical to the one that I had on my 12-bolt, 69 Z, and like the repro bracket unit I purchased from Rick's 1st Gen.
