casting # help

Was thinking of doing pure stock racing, and I was looking for some correct casting # for heads and intake. I have a 68 rs/ss and it had a 295 hp 350 . what do i need to find out correct #

1.  You should access <NHRA.com>, locate the pull-down menu at the right-hand edge of the window for "RULES."  One of the choices under that heading is titled "Engine Blueprint Specifications."  Follow that link to Chevrolet.  Select "1968" under Chevrolet and all the information you are looking for will be provided.  If you encounter problems, e-mail me.

2.  Before you go too far down the path, locate someone who has raced that combination (perferably for 20+ years) and explore all the ins and outs of racing a 1968 Camaro in Stock Eliminator.  There are issues of which you need to be aware.

this is a class run at our local track once a year, but draws a lot of cars, mid mich motorplex, looking mainly to put motor back to stock parts, i have a correct block for year just looking for topend

The most commonly seen NHRA-legal head castings would be 462 or 186.  They also accept 041 but that casting has the accessory mounting holes in the end of the head.  It is out of the ordinary for a car doubling at car shows.  The Quadrajet manifold casting number ends in "803."

The 291 castings are still pretty plentiful and I suspect that they are acceptable too.

The complete list (per NHRA) is:  291,292,186,041,492,462.  I'm embarrassed to say that I don't know which of those has accessory mounting holes and which are regular "double hump" heads.  Jerry, as you are well aware, NHRA changes the lists of accepted components without warning and sometimes seemingly without reason. 

Sometimes I wish I had the old dog back and then again, when I think about trying to make that Powerglide run with 3-speeds in bad air, I don't think I need that much challenge to occupy my time any more.

I know that the 186, 041, 492s do have the accessory holes.  The 462s, 291s do not.  Don't know about the 292s.

We had one hell of a party at our place on July 1st, check out my website.  I'm sure you remember Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs.  One of the best times of my life!  Jimmy Gilmer and Stan Lark used to drag race during the 1960s.  Stan is very close friends with Wayne MeMurtry and his wife.

FYI...1968 041's do NOT have accessory holes in them. The 1969's do......

That's interesting.  Don't ever recall seeing any '68 041 castings.

They are late 68 castings on a 0702EE block.....car is 07E... I think the heads are cast F268? I can double check the dates when I get home..
