Write up for changing shift detent?
« on: June 11, 2007, 02:33:01 AM »
This weekend I removed the PG that was in my car and installed a TH-350. Now I need to change the shifter detent and shifter pattern glass, is there a write up or instructions on how to remove the center console and change the detent anywhere? TIA

you will probably have to purchase a three speed shifter if you have a factory power glide shifter?

I don't think so, I think all you should have to do is change out the shifter detent plate. As far as I can tell the detents are the only thing that is different because of the number of gears.

What year car?  I know 67s had a different shifter for a PG to Th400. The Th350 would also be the same as a Th400. I'm not to sure about 68 or 69. If it's a 67 you can make the shifter work with a little grinding to let the shifter go back a little more.

It's a 69. What I need to know is how to remove and reinstall the center console and shifter properly.

1) Remove the 4 shifter bezel screws.
2) Turn the bezel 90 degres and lift the bezel over the shifter.
3) Disconnect the 2 pattern lights and lift the shift pattern plate out.
4) The detent is retained in front by a 7/16 bolt, remove the bolt.
5) The rear of the detent is retained by a large steele rivet, grind the tail of the rivet off.
6) Remove the detent.
7) Install the new detent in reverse order.
