1968 Camaro RS/SS help!!!
« on: March 20, 2007, 03:48:10 AM »
Hey! New to the forum but have been using CRG for years now. Im only 17 but already have bought and sold a '67 SS clone and just bought a '68 Yenko clone ;D. She's got a brand spankin new 427 that i cant wait to break in! Anyway, when i bought the car, i was told it was an original RS/SS, but there was no documentation to prove this. I have heard something about a hole in the Firewall below the master cylinder next to the steering linkage to verify that it truly is an original RS. I also have heard from only one or two places something about an extra hole in the rear driver side frame rail to verify the SS authenticity. I do not know for sure whether either of these are a solid, reliable way to verify either the RS or SS options on a '68 camaro. Has anyone heard of this or was it just a rumor that i heard?? ???

Thanks!

Hi & Welcome Craig -

There is a hole in the "firewall" to the left of where the master cylinder (or brake booster with power brakes) bolts to the "firewall" on original '68 Rally Sports.  This hole is where the factory routed the two vacuum hoses to the headlight switch.  As for authenticity of this hole, who's to say someone can't drill this hole post-factory during a Rally Sport conversion?  As far as the "SS hole in the left rear frame rail", could you possibly be thinking of the tail pipe adapter plate used on '69 Camaros with dual exhaust?

Craig -

I just emailed you a photo with the "firewall" hole location from a '68 Rally Sport survivor.  Good luck.

If it is a bib block car the heater hoses will come through to the passenger side fender well.  SB came through more to the center of the firewall.  You already probably know about the front and rear valances having turn lights - front and reverse lights - rear.  Also the rear lights were trimmed with black paint and the entire lense was red.  67 had electric flipper lights and 68 had vacumm.

Also, on SS Camaros the speedometer cable goes thru the firewall in a different location than a non-SS car, but I don't exactly remember the difference.  Can someone help me out here?

I know that she was an original RS due to the fenders, reverse lights, tail lights, and front valance lights. And now after i checked my firewall, it does indeed have the correct looking hole next to my master cylinder. At least i would assume it is an original RS, either that or someone did a very good clone. As for the SS part, i am still clueless about how to tell. I only faintly remember someone saying something about the rear frame rail, and it very well may be an exhaust hanger and not a hole that was mentioned. I also don't think it was an original BCB because the radiator (assumed to be original) has a 21" core, not 23". But does anyone know how to tell an original SS from a base coupe??

Thanks!

Does anyone have a picture of the exhaust hanger bracket? I am very curious to see if my Yenko has one

The tailpipe hanger is bolted to the bracket in this pic of the drivers side frame rail.
It is the bracket to the right of the shock

Did yours have multi-leaf springs or a 12 bolt?Does it have the original hood with the grills in it?Does it have  a tic-toc tach?Big block cars have different motor mount brkts. One is taller than the other on bb cars. There is a brake proportioning valve  under the driver-side subframe for bb cars or A/C cars.Even the hood light in the engine bay is further to the outside on bb.Does yours have any srtipes on it?I had to look between the header panel and fender to find the original stripe for my 68 RS/SS.It was solid black when my brother purchased it in 1973.So I had to look to see if it was the D90 OR D91 stripe. If I can think of aything else I will post it,and good luck with your car too.
