Steering again
« on: February 19, 2023, 10:29:27 PM »
So I got my steering wheel all put back together after changing out ignition key switch. Upon reassembly I found that PO put steering wheel on 180 out. So now its back together correct,  as it only goes one way. (sport wheel). Anyways I cant get steering wheel to point straight without the front wheels being turned slightly to the left. I tried putting tires straight and pulling pitman arm off and indexing steering wheel to straight but the splines wouldnt match up. Its a power steering car BTW. Weird thing is that I get 3.5 turns of the steering wheel lock to lock. Is this something that can be corrected with an alignment? Perhaps a longer or shorter pitman arm? I dont think it is a quick ratio box for what its worth. 69 SS BB

Camaro SS with power steering included the faster ratio. Should have the 5.75" pitman arm.

Sounds like an adjustment of the tie rod sleeves is in order, usually part of an alignment.

Is that pitman measured center hole to center hole?

William, can you send me a link to that correct pitman? I cant seem to find any 5 3/4 inches. All are 5 7/8 or 5 1/4 or manual versions only

Good luck finding a decent - usable fast ratio GM unit.  They are extremely hard to find for a power steering car - and if you do find one, get ready to shell out some $$$$.  But if originality doesn't bother you, the aftermarket has them.
