Starter Won't Stop.
« on: January 12, 2022, 07:22:59 PM »
recently had the oe starter and solenoid rebuilt.
reinstalled it and now when i turn the key to start the starter engages and turns over but will not stop, starter continues to be engaged and turning even with the key off and out...only until I disconnect the battery will it disengage and stop.
this cycle repeats again after reconnecting the battery and turning the key.
boy am I glad I had the coil wire to the cap disconnected.
Is it fair to assume that the solenoid should be the long one without the copper spacer to the motor

the replacement starter works properly.
chased all wiring including ignition switch an and everything tests out good.
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the starter gear is two tight to the ring gear. Might have to shim it out a little.

Did you forget to install the solenoid plunger return spring? The reason it continues to run is because the solenoid plunger is still making electrical contact with the terminals.

The problem as described is the "OE" Solenoid.

If the O.E> is still out of the Car obtain an inexpensive (Affordable) replacement Solenoid and swap out the "REBUILT" O.E. and re=bench test the assembly.

My thinking is  if Someone Rebuilt the O.E. Solenoid they may have miss wired the Pull in power wiring and when the Plunger is energized the only way to de-energize the coil is to remove the Hot power to the Main stud (Contact).

Photo of simple unloaded bench test, Do not allow starter to spin longer than about 3 sec.

Ed had a "great idea", Spring forces the contact open breaking the contact. Bet he is correct.    Oh,,,,,,,,,,spring is in,,,Hum

the spring is in.

Then you either have a wiring issue, a defective solenoid or a starter gear problem like RikerZ28 stated above. Pull the starter and solenoid and bench test the assembly as shown in Jim's picture.

seems to work fine bench testing. engaged and disengages as soon as powered off

Then it's either a wiring issue or the starter gear isn't disengaging the flywheel. Like Bob said, you may need to shim it.

You didn’t mention what year you are working on. I ask, because I had this happen on a 67 Chevelle I had. Still had same problem after changing starters, twice! Turned out it was ignition switch. Same switch used on 67 & 8 Camaros, I believe?  There is your hint for the day.

Just had this exact problem on another car.  The replacement starter had an aftermarket replacement nose cone and it was very difficult to install/line up.  Had to disconnect the battery to get it to stop. Worked fine out of the car.

I put a GM PG260 gear reduction permanent magnet starter on it.  Works great but it is not "restoration correct".  Weighs just a fraction of the original 10MT design.  Requires 2 new mounting bolts specific to the PG260 but it is 100% new, not rebuilt and under $100.

Let me know if anybody wants more details.

More about PMGR starters HERE, and yes, unless your car's being judged, I HIGHLY recommend them. (Note that the links in my original thread are no longer active, but just do a Google search on PMGR starter and you'll get TONS of hits.)

THIS is the one I just got off of ebay for my 57 Chevy 427. The original starter from the 327 that was in the car worked fine for the 327, but it just couldn't handle the heat from the headers on the 427 and the new PMGR has NO problems at all. In fact, I run PMRG starters on my 68 Camaro, my 69 Corvette and now the 57 Chevy.

Here's one more thing that can be added to a starter not stopping.
A: ried shimming but no changes.
B: pulled the solenoid apart and found that restorer blasted the plunger and powder coated it, loo0ked pretty but not what should be done!
bet I blew out 50 plus beads from inside the plunger. this was causing the plunger not to move freely and to hang up in the solenoid.

All is well, at least for another day in Z land.

Thanks for all the input.

Geez. Glad you got it figured out but I don't think I'd use that shop anymore!
