Rally Wheel Paint
« on: December 04, 2021, 01:53:39 PM »
Restoring my original YH wheels. Looks like the wheel was dipped in semigloss black, then the front of the wheel was painted with the Argent silver, hence the over spray often seen on the back side of the wheel. Can anyone confirm this?

http://www.camaros.org/assemblyprocess.shtml

Sheet Metal Painting: All raw parts (wheels, brackets, etc.) and the front end sheet metal (hoods, fenders, lower fender extensions, header panels, front valances, radiator supports, inner fenders, etc.) went through a cleaning, degreasing, and hot phosphate system, then through a flow-coat booth where it was deluged with black primer from all directions and then baked.

Wheel Painting: The wheels were removed from the prime conveyor and placed in another conveyor system that took them through a booth where their faces were sprayed with color wheel enamel, then through an oven, and the conveyor continued to the wheel & tire assembly area where the wheels were picked off.

From what I read on the site, yes.
From my own wheels, yup.
Runs are obvious on the front, with actually just a thin coat of silver. Yup, overspray on the rear.

Just did mine a few weeks ago, if I haven't already, I'll post.

Came out great, but not pulling a muscle patting myself on the back, lol. Wheels vgc, cleaned, scuffed, LITE coat of paint, had about two hours into them.

Hi John, hope all is well.... info supplied and your analysis dead on.  Note, overspray on many survivor wheels I’ve reviewed is on the light side so I deliberately complete the overspray thru the wheels windows and then block off and finish argent silver.

All,

Thanks for this info. Very helpfui!

William, what was the purpose of the phosphating before priming? Is this for paint bonding or rust protection or both?

Chick, Nice to hear from you! I appreciate the tip to do a light overspray through the windows, then block off for spraying the front.

My spare had been painted but the 4 YH's on the car were original paint. The wheel back looks as described above.

Is the article by JohnZ on the process for wheel receiving, prep, paint, etc on the CRG site? (I know there is a breakdown in the Assembly process A-Z written by him)
Was the single page article (with the reference to the painting fixture with 5 tapered spindles for the set of wheels) only on the NCRS site?
