Paint metallic grade
« on: May 06, 2021, 11:50:49 PM »
Anyone using Nasan colors.... I'd like to know if the metallic grind is as fine as original 67 paint. My car is the 'K' and the metallic is pretty fine. I've seen a lot of later color matches where the metallic is no where near the same grind as the older colors from the '60s and stands out easily to someone who has looked a lot of restorations.

Personally I do not like the NASON paints for anything other than blacks or semi gloss mixes etc I do not feel like they have as much "PIGMENT" in the paints - yes they are less expensive, however they do not cover as well as Cromabase or chroma premier. -

One of the biggest problems is there is more metal flake "apparent" in the newer mixtures and the fact that with base clear the metal flake "lays out" differently than OEM lacquer.

FWIW Using the former DUPONT Chromabase paints to pass NCRS paint judging (must appear as a OEM applied finish) You have to reduce the metallic content by approx 25-30% and then box the color and clear at a 50 -50 ratio and shoot a couple of coats then ONE of pure clear with 15% flattener in it to take away the "plastic" look.  When polished it makes a difference if they are side by side.

This car was shot as referenced above.
