Header installation

I am going to install a new set of headers in my 69 Z in the near future, and wonder what is current thinking regarding gaskets, etc. in order to get a good seal, minimizing exhaust leakage. It's alway been a headache. What's working for others?

the aluminum gaskets i feel unless the headers have a really thick flange, they warp to EZ. I think the copper ones work the best

We use the dark gray heavy-duty Mr. Gasket header gaskets.  Have never had a problem with them and they seal well.

I have used the Felpro gaskets that come in the engine kits. The type that is perforated metal on one side. They have never leaked. Looks the best since they are 3 piece. If you use Thorley headers the backdrive can be made to work.

The header flange bolts WILL loosen and cause exhaust leaks/gasket failure, unless you check them regularly or use either Stage 8 locking bolts or drilled bolts and safety-wire them.

get your headers mounting surfaces milled then use ultra copper with quality bolts and lockwashers, and forget it.  no leaks, nothing to ever tighten, i have been doing this for years and it works!

With milled flanges, are you using only ultra copper and no gasket, correct?

I have been using the black UltraSeal Mr Gasket for many years,  they have served me well.  For my Thorleys, I use the #5907  .
