My first car
« on: August 26, 2020, 05:10:59 AM »
I bought my Camaro in 1987. It was my first car. I knew I wanted a hot rod when I went looking around for a car. I spotted this 69 Camaro and had to have it. It had rust starting to bubble on the quarter panels but I didn’t care it was a 69 Camaro. I paid $800.00 for it and drove it home. That was a great day for me. I had my own set of wheels and it was a cool car. I didn’t know what the numbers or codes meant on the car but I was always curious. I remember talking to a guy when I first owned the car who was supposed to be a Camaro expert and asked him about the cowl tag.He told me I had a Z28 because of the #8 on the body sequence so I thought it was a Z28. The 1988 December issue of Guide to Muscle Cars had a Camaro decode article and I found out my Camaro is a SS396.It was excitement for me all over again. Then a few years ago I find your fine website and lots of my questions are answered. I am thankful for everyone who posts because my knowledge increases even more. The picture attached is the first picture I took of the car a couple of days after purchase.

Wow $800 was a good buy in 1987, whether the car had a 396 or a replacement Small block...
Is your car a - - paint code? I see it is "Carolina" or Colorado Blue in the photo.
Here are the prices I saw in 87... when I was buying my first cars.
I paid $450 in 87 for a 1973 Z28 - my highschool friend bought a 69 Z non numbers X77 for $7500 in 1987 - nice driver which he played with for 10 years before restoring.
I bought my 68 SS 396 basket case for $1250 in 1988-89...

Olympic Gold originally. I bought it light blue. I have found evidence of dark blue, yellow, maroon, green and possibly a different shade of gold.

Are you sure that it is a SS396?  The 1st Yenko’s ordered were X66 and Olympic Gold was one of the colors. Perhaps you should post up the VIN? Or let more experienced guys on this site evaluate what you actually have?

I should’ve bought more too. I know what you mean. I would like to see a picture of your 68Z and 69SS396. I bought a 1968 a couple of years after buying my 69. I wanted to buy a 67 to have one of all 3 years but never did and my 68 I sold many years ago.

Bentley my VIN is posted on this section titled database addition. I hesitated for a long time not wanting to post anything online but I came around. I don’t know what this car’s history is because when I bought it I didn’t care about previous ownership. I need to start digging to see if I can find any past owners.

A corvette bronze '68 Camaro is truly unique and beautiful!  :)    A friend when I was in the USAF owned one (327 4-speed).  I liked his car as well as any Z28 at the time - '68-69 time frame.. :)
