My car's original Chevy information
« on: July 28, 2020, 07:41:16 PM »
Hi, I just your article.  I own 124379N638242.  I just bought it.  If you're keeping information on these and want some from me, please respond to this message.  The car is in New Jersey now.  I don't know where it came from originally.  I read your post about not asking for paperwork.  I get it.  I am trying to research this car so if anyone on this post knows some web sites that can help me, please reply back.

Thanks
Vinny

Is there any place on the web where I can find the original records from GM for what my car came configured with?  I just bought 124379N638242, a 1969 Camaro SS.  It's now a Pro Tour car but I would like to research its history.  Where should I start?

Thanks
Vinny

Post a photo of the trim tag.  Also look into https://www.chevymuscledocs.com/

I had the tag data from the ad. Was born Olympic Gold, Dover White painted top. The X44 code indicates it was not a Camaro SS.

There are no Chevrolet production records.

Thanks for your replies.  I also researched the cowl tag from this site's wealth of information and found the color combination and other codes.  I have to admit, I am a little upset that the car was not originally a SS but at this point, just about the only things on the car that are stock are the body and most of the interior.  It's been totally redone and has an LS Corvette engine with aluminum camm'ed heads, factory A/C added, Tremec 6 speed manual, 12 bolt 411 rear, Flor Masters, traction bars.  It's a beast and it rumbles the floor.  So, I'm never gonna say its a show car, never gonna get $180,000 for it but I'm sure gonna enjoy driving it.  This is a great board and I will be checking back for more info and also to help out as I find things.  I am now a member of the Camaro club. On that note, are there any Camaro clubs you would recommend joining?  Also, how can I tell what engine originally came with that car?  There doesn't seem to be that information on the cowl tag; maybe someplace else?

All the best,
Vinny

How to tell what engine came in the car originally
« Reply #5 on: July 29, 2020, 01:21:29 PM »
Hi there.  Is there a way to determine what engine came in the car?  The original engine is not in my car but I am documenting it and would like to know for future reference.  I decoded the cowl tag from information I found on this web site but I can't seem to find anything about that.

Thanks for your replies.
Vinny

With an 8 cylinder VIN [124...] it would have had either the standard [L14] 307; possibly the optional [L65] 350-2.

Looks to be a great build; drive the wheels off it!

Welcome Vinny! Congrats on your purchase. Sadly there are not many 1st gen Camaro clubs in NJ.  But some clubs may work for you.  But you would want a club close to you, so are you North, South or Central?  I am central NJ, the closest Camaro club to me is the south jersey one, but is mostly 5th gen owners.

For $50 I think, the GM Heritage Center web site will produce and provide a document based on you VIN afaik.
A generic 100+ page PDF file for that year Camaro is available on the GM Heritage website for free.

Vinny,

You can send your VIN to the NCRS - they will verify build date and the dealer and zone it was shipped to. Unfortunately, that's all they can provide, but it will tell you what area of the country it originally called home.
Fortunately, your car is in the "good" build range, there is a gap in some of the information from shippers for a few months prior to your VIN number (one of my four fell into that pit). See the link to the thread below - quite a few of us have done it.

"12 bolt 411 rear"

Vinny,

Do you know what the rear axle code is ? How did you determine what the rear end ratio is (sales information or visual of the stamped code on the rear end ?). Just curious -
