69 camaro fuse block and underhood harnesses middle bolt
« on: August 09, 2020, 09:49:11 PM »
replaced my eng and front light harnessess and tried screwing the middle bolt back into under dash fuse block and the bolt is not tightening up? was there something on fuse block hole that was there to catch middle bolt and tight it up to fuse block, maybe a small nut or washer to help tighten up that middle bolt? thanks

IIRC that screw/bolt is a very long bolt and screws in for quite a while before it snugs up.   Did you clean the parts and ensure that nothing was interfering wtih the parts?

I switched out my original bolt. I didn't like the new one that came with it....Joe

yes it is long bolt but it has nothing to catch it and tighten i screwed bolt 5 minutes and cought nothing to tighten has to be something for it to catch to maybe i lost it when i pride the two apart from firewall. those screws are locked in with a little washer that does not seem to want to come off.

IIRC (again)... and I've only done this ONE TIME, several years ago...   the long bolt that runs thru the connector on the engine side of the firewall engages a nut which is a part of, or associated with the fuse panel under the dash.    Overtightening that bolt/nut would probably strip something out; I can recall if the nut threads are actually cut into the fuse panel plastic, but I believe there is a central nut in the panel.

PS.  One has to "judge" how tightly any bolt/nut must be tightened.  There are tables for torque based on screw/bolt size, material, etc but basically small diameter screws/nuts get SMALL torque and it increases as the bolt/screws get larger.  I've known some people who tighten all fasteners (regardless of size) as if they are torquing head bolts!   :)   hopefully that is not you, and the nut in the fuse panel has only come loose.  It should be easy enough to peek under the dash, feel for the fuse panel and figure out what is wrong... ;)

I JUST WENT THRU THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH A REPLACEMENT HARNESS,,,SPLIT THE FUSE BLOCK IN HALF AND YOU MOST LIKELY ARE GOING TO FIND THE NUT FLOATING AROUND IN THERE,,,,IT HAD A INSERT THAT LOOKS JUST LIKE THOSE STAMPED NUTS THAT ARE USED IN FURNITURE,,,,NOT CLOSE TO ORIGINAL,,,,I TOOK SOME EPOXY AND GLUED IT IN THERE,,, I USED A BOLT TO HOLD IT TIGHT WHILE IT SET UP,,,,WORKED LIKE A CHARM
