LA/Nor Vehicle ID numbers

Since the vehicle ID numbers were assigned in sequence at the plant, could a car produced in LA have the same last 6 digits as a car produced in Norwood? For example, could there be 124379L520247 and 124379N520247 VINs? Or are they unique?

I don't know the answer but wouldn't that be neat for a collector.

Both factories used the same numbers. There's a Los Angeles 8L300001 and a Norwood 8N300001 VIN 68 Camaro out there somewhere!

In 69 the last 6 digits of the VINs could be the same at both the LA and Norwood plants, ie N523456, and L523456.  The 69 body numbers were unique since they were assigned by the central office.  In 67 and 68 both the VINs and the body numbers could be repeated, ie N100001  NOR100001, and L100001 LOS100001 (of course these numbers don't really exist) since the VINs were sequential, and the body numbers were assigned by each plant.

Actually there was a Norwood N300001, and a Los Angeles L300001.  The first production VIN is always number 1.

 Is it possiable that a Camaro might have VIN N300001 and a Firebird L300001? Being both cars were built at the same plant? Or did Pontiac have a different number sequence?

No. For the 67-69 Firechicken, sequential production numbers started with 600001 for 6-cylinder models and 100001 for V8 models. Although the 1967 Camaro also started with 100001, the 67 Bird was only built in Lordstown, Ohio ("U" designation), so although the numbering sequence would match (1xxxxx), the plant designator woudn't.

Van Nuys didn't start building Firechickens until 1968 (Norwood until 1969), and at that point the numbering sequence for the Camaro went to 3xxxxx (1968) and 5xxxxx (1969), while the Bird stayed with the 100000 (V8) and 600000 (L6) sequence.

Firebird production was transferred from Lordstown to Norwood on April 15, 1969; I removed the tooling from Lordstown and had it shipped to Norwood as part of preparing Lordstown for the buildout of the "F" and "B"-body and conversion of the plant to Vega production.
