A white with red Camaro RS/SS 396 convertible was used for the American 500 NASCAR Grand National event held at the North Carolina Motor Speedway in Rockingham, North Carolina on Sunday, October 27, 1968.  Richard Petty won the race in his 1968 Plymouth Road Runner.  This is the second NASCAR Grand National event to be held at the track during the 1968 season.  The Camaro is probably the same car that was used to pace the Carolina 500 held earlier in the season on Sunday, June 16, 1968.

Once again I find it interesting that they were still using a 1968 model Camaro for the pacing duties when the new 1969 models were in the showroom.  Also notice in the first picture you can see that it looks like the car is wearing two different types of tires.  The white stripe on the front tire looks to be thinner than the stripe on the rear tire.

While I couldn't find any photographs showing the Camaro pace car at the event, there is footage of the the race at Youtube.  This footage again came from an episode of the automotive program entitled "Car & Track" which originally aired during the 1968 television season.  I took a few pictures of the car while watching it.  See the program here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJgH43Io1yY

Here is the cover from the souvenir event program.  Notice how it used a photo of the pace lap from the Carolina 500 held at the track earlier in the year.  It came from www.progcovers.com
