1968 dash pad trim
« on: March 16, 2019, 11:23:48 PM »
I have a question about originality of the stainless dash pad trim piece. Did all Camaros with SS and Standard interior get the trim piece or just the ones with Deluxe Interior? My car is SS 396 L34 with A/C, PS,PB,PW tilt wheel, bumper guards but standard interior. Currently it has a urethane repro dash pad without the trim piece. I am going to install a correct vinyl covered reproduction and I want to know if this car would have or could have come with the steel dash pad trim? I have seen a few 68's with the trim piece and the standard interior and I have seen some without the trim piece. What is original and correct?

If your car came with RPO Z23 (Special Interior) or RPO Z87 (Custom Interior), you got the trim. More info HERE.

My '68 Z has a standard interior with the dash trim - listed as an option on the dealer invoice, Deluxe wheel and walnut dash trim, too - not an SS, of course, but shows the option with a standard interior (pretty inexpensive to boot).

Thanks for the prompt replies Ed and Steve. That's what I needed to know. I forgot about the data in the interior special report ( hat tip Ed). So I have two follow up questions - does the dash pad trim simply stick into the soft part of the dash pad with the thin tabs? Is there any clips or screws that hold it on other than the needle like tabs? When these cars were assembled , was the trim piece added to the dash pad after the pad was attached to the dash or before?
Thanks again

I think I have my answer to the last question - Did/Does the trim piece go on the pad before installation? I think it probably has to in order to bend over the tabs and hold the trim tight against the pad. But maybe I am wrong. I have never disassembled an original dash pad but maybe those that have can chime in with advice or knowledge.

I;ve not had mine out, either - but I know someone that likely has the answer. I'll ask -

Has tabs on the molding that holds it tight to the dash pad. No clips or screws was used on the molding just the pad. And yes would have to be on the pad before the dash was installed Hope this helps!

I agree Steve as that was a very nice addition at little cost. Our 68Z has that option as well.

Just be careful on the reproductions.  I bought one from Al Knoch in Texas and the base of the pad was plastic and warped after less than a year.  I ended up buying one on Ebay and sending out to be redone.  Expensive lesson.

Where did you send the pad to be redone? Were you happy with finished product. I'm only aware of 2 companies that redo the pads. Always looking for first hand opinions. Thanks
