Found a direct replacement for the door glass roller
« on: October 05, 2018, 09:40:09 PM »
Sorry for the long winded write-up.......I wanted to share this with you in regards to the door window guide roller.
At the last show I had my car in, I was rolling the windows up when the judge came by and the drivers door window suddenly jammed about 1/2 way up. I could also see the front edge was out of the channel. The judge was cool about it and even commented that the guide roller probably cracked. He was close as the rollers center was cracked and allowed the stud to pop out when the door closed and the glass in the down position.
After doing a long search on eBay and other Camaro suppliers for an exact roller and not finding any, I stumbled across one vendor that had what I needed. The listing is for a late model Camaro as well as other GM cars. I took a chance and ordered a pack of 4 (the smallest package they sold for $11) because the dimensions they showed looked almost exact.
In a nutshell, when I got the rollers (mounted on studs) I put one on the vice to straddle the jaws and with a nail countersink, gave the stud end a firm hit with a mallet and popped it out of the roller. Being I didn't want to remove the side glass completely to drill out the stud, I slid the new roller down the slide from the top and lined up the original stud (with a little grease) with the roller opening and grabbed the slide and window frame area and gave a good squeeze until I heard a healthy "pop".  No more glass falling off the slide and the window rolls up/down smoothly.
Here is the seller's ad for an 6-pack (ask them if they will sell 4):

I hope this helps others with worn door guide rollers.

Great detailed info Mike!
I had to change a roller in my 68 years ago and I just pressed the new rivet in. I ordered one from Rick's back then, I think. I'm not sure I thought of just snapping the roller on the old stud.

Is that item unique to '67 models? or is the same part used on '68's and '69's??

Not sure, Gary. From looking at all the generic replacements out there before I found these I see the 67-69 Camaro's grouped together. But this vendor wasn't aware with what they are selling does fit a '67. Hopefully they will include 67 (maybe 68-69's too?) in the usage instead of late model Camaro's.

The vendor will likely quadruple their price if they realize they fit early Camaros too...  :)

.. SO I just ordered the parts on the 'take a chance' principle!   (didn't want to take the door apart to check first).. :)

Thanks for the info Mike. I too ordered some to put back just in case, and or if there is a price spike.

The base of the new stud looks to be approximately 1/16" taller than the factory stud. So, if you decided to replace the whole part (roller w/stud) then it should fit, and the extra 1/16" can be worked out during window alignments.

Great information Mike.

Gary I think they should fit 68 and 69 too.

I just tried to ordered six, but the seller is away until October 12.

Seller has been affected by Hurricane Michael. Out of business for a few weeks.

This is the tool I used to install the roller with the rivet, FWIW.
