1968 Camaro SS Console Wood Grain
« on: October 09, 2018, 02:41:00 PM »
I'm restoring a 1968 Camaro SS with 4-speed manual transmission back to as close to factory as I can.  Did all of the consoles for this car have a wood-grained console?  My car is a May 1968 one, and my understanding is the ashtray might also be wood grain.  And is there any way to know if it came with gauges or not?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!!

I'm a little confused by your question. I'm assuming you mean the trim on the TOP of the console, not the console itself, right?

All 1968 consoles came with a (faux) walnut wood grain shifter plate. If you didn't order the optional U17 gauge package or the optional U35 electric clock, then you also got a (faux) walnut wood grain "filler plate" at the front (see picture attached).

As for the ash tray, read THIS.

And there's no way to know if your car originally came with gauges unless you have paperwork.

Thanks, Ed.  Sorry about the confusion on the question, I wasn't very clear.  Fortunately you were able to answer my questions.  It sounds like I'll need to purchase a reproduction console without the wood grain trim on the ashtray and possibly attempt to buy the correct ashtray separate.  The link to the ashtray discussion was very helpful.

Thank you, and have a great day!!

Something was not made clear... the ashtray on the console DOES NOT EVER HAVE WOODGRAIN. The ashtray on the DASH is different, dlx interior has a Wood Grained surround where the heater control and ash tray are located and the Ashtray is wood grained.

Wouldn't all cars with console and gauges have a small hole and grommet in the firewall for the oil sending tube? Just another clue to whether it was an option on that car.

Yes, but that doesn't prove it came that way from the factory. Anyone with a drill can make a hole.

There's several things to check. Wiring is #1.
