TH400 filler tube
« on: June 08, 2018, 01:27:03 PM »
I tracked down a 68 Camaro TH400 that still has the original filler tube. I noticed on top of the filler tube, there appears to be what looks like a spout on the side. I'm 99.9% sure that it is just a dent, but very curious and cautious because it's perfectly formed. As good original ones are very hard to find, I'd like to check with members if it is a dent before I go ahead and straighten it out. I can't think of any possible reason for it to be there. I hope I'm right, otherwise I'll look real stupid.

Think of it this way, Does the level indicator have a matching bump in the cap below the pull lever? (Not that I am aware of)

= BENT

I will post a close up of my numbers matching 68 Code CC trans filler tube later

Here are a couple of pictures from my '68 TH400. The tube is round with a slight "D" shape to it. Note that the dipstick also has a corresponding "D" shape. The diameter is 0.689.

I think you're dipstick has been messed with.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the feedback Bob and Jim, much appreciated. In your photo Jim, it showed part of the vacuum line. Is it possible you could take a photo of your vacuum line from above the filler tube and around to where it connects to the manifold fitting? I need to buy one and the repo ones vary in shape. I've tried to source an original one, but can't find an NOS or used one anywhere.

OK Here are a couple shots I hope you can make out the shape and bends,  know this line is original and never cut, they are a Bear look at the line & filler tube they CROSS behind the block and transmission, it take a lot of time and movement of the motor to fish it in there, impossible with out motor movement I tried and we had to lift the motor back up
Excuse the errors and grime I drive mine:) & occasional Friday night drags spinning the Original "MY" motor as far as it will go!

Many thanks Jim, that's exactly the view I was after. At least now, I know what shape the top section of the vacuum line has to be. I had a feeling it might be tricky to get it in there between the firewall and block, so thanks also for the advice on how to go about it. Glad to see you drive yours like I do, as there's nothing better than firing up the big block and going for a cruise. Not much fun leaving them parked up all the time and being too afraid to take them out in case they get a bit dirty.
Regards Larry.
