Exhaust Tip Finish

Hi,

Does anyone know the correct exhaust tip finish that was used in the mid year exhaust change? Specifically for a car built in Feb., March 1969 which has the single cross flow muffler. I've seen many old photos that show it to be bare steel. Appreciate any help.

I assume you are referring to the N10 dual exhaust system.

Bare steel would have rusted immediately. I had both NOS GM and Arvin service replacement pipes back in the day. The GM pipes were definitely coated; probably aluminized steel. The Arvin pipes were uncoated steel.

Hi William,

Thanks for the reply. I had my exhaust re-done about thirty years ago and it's not GM but is a coated steel. Many people told me that the tips should be chrome (stainless) and I couldn't find any documentation to support this. Thanks you for clearing this up!

Chevy sent notice to dealers that as of May 19, 1969 "bright metal" tailpipe extensions would be included with N10, Z27 and Z/28 with those prices increased $15.80. [They did not increase COPO prices]. NC8 chambered exhaust was dropped as an option at the same time. Chambered never had chromed tips; stainless steel was not used.

The few surviving cars with an original revised N10 system show a difference. The RH tailpipe is 2 piece with the lower section chromed. It was welded to the muffler. The LH pipe is the standard production part with the lower section polished and flash-chromed.
