Still learning

Hi there,
I have a 68 which I'm still restoring and learning about. I've had several people tell me that they believe it's an original SS. Unfortunately the engine has been replaced and I don't have any documentation about the original.

I had stripes painted on the hood & deck and the body shop told me they believe it could be an original SS because of some of the markings they found.

The VIN only tells me it's an 8 cylinder, convertible. Is there any way to decode or any way to find out more history on my car?

I've been referring to her as a 'tribute' because I don't want to mislead anyone. I love her no matter what, but I'd sure like to know. She's a beaut.

If it was a LA car it might have a build sheet that could provide clues.

Did you get any original paperwork with the car, or the P.O.P.?

Run the car through GM Vintage Car Services and see if there is any chance it was in Canada at some point - if so they would have everything you need in the way of answers.  Its not likely - but you never know!

I didn't receive any paperwork when I bought the car. It was a "tech school project" and then raffled off. I believe the guy that won it, lived in Michigan and later sold it to the cousin of the guy I bought it from.  Unfortunately there's no paper trail.

68s can be difficult. Tell us about the trans, rear axle(codes) and any options. More pics?

What markings did the body shop find? And as John mentioned it would help to add info like your rear axle stampings. Also, did you apply to NCRS for dealer information and when built? And most of all welcome aboard, have fun investigating, and like you wrote she's still a great ride!

Thanks, everyone for your info! The original motor was a 350 V8 and it had a two speed power glide trans. The body shop told me that they saw evidence that it had original hideaway headlights, which may indicate that it had the RS trim package. They also told me that all of the badge markings were present, but had been filled in at some point. They redrilled the holes and replaced the badges.

I'm having a new carborouter and manifold installed this week. A mystery issue I'm having is with the wiring. I haven't had it looked at yet, because I haven't driven her at night. When the lights are on, and I hit the break, the tail lights go out. Hopefully it's a simple fix.

I'll post a pic of the manual in the windshield was in the trunk when I bought her and the 400 V8 engine with some of the shiny new parts I replaced
