SS Tail Lights
« on: December 30, 2006, 11:54:16 PM »
Many so-called "SS" cars do not have the SS tail light lenses with the horizontal chrome bar in the center all the way across the lens.  Did all original SS cars have these lenses?  Also I have seen some SS cars with the area around the lenses painted flat black.  Was this factory original, or somebody's idea to be different?  Thanks.   :-\

Gary,

The chrome strip on the lenses was found on cars with the Z21 (Style Trim Group) or the Z22 option (Rally Sport, which included the Z21 option) and wasn't associated with the SS option.

There were 102,740 cars built in 1969 with the Z21 option group and 37,773 cars with the Z22 Rally Sport option.

Only SS cars with one of the two above options would have the strip.

Gary,

If you are referring to the entire rear panel being painted black, that denotted SS-396 only.

Ed,

This brings up a good point.  Has the CRG ever pictorally documented the Z21 & Z22 options respectively?  It would be nice to see the style trim group
particulars as it pertained to striping, chrome highlights, etc.. Same for the RS package.

I don't think so Steve. There are books that show the options, but I don't know of one that shows them in a "Z21" or "Z22" collage. That would be a nice page for reference. To show exactly what you got (pictorially) with each of the main option groups. Z21 would be one set of pictures and Z22 another. you could even have pictures for the interior groups, Z87 and Z23.

Anyone with lots of pictures willing to group them into pictorial collages?

lenses with the horizontal chrome bar in the center all the way across the lens.

This would be for RS only.  Would not be on all Z21-optioned cars.

Dave,

Which Z21 cars didn't get this? The reference material I have shows that the Z21 option came with:

Fender Striping
Bright Accents on simulated rear fender louvers
Front and rear wheel opening moldings
Black body sill
Rear panel emblem
Bright Taillight accents

Sport Coupe also included Bright roof drip molding

Ed,

You are correct on that.  I was just clarifying since he asked about the horizontal trim that runs through the center of the lens, which would be the RS taillight lenses.

Also, to add to the Z21 cars, the X55 and X66 cars also got the taillight trim.

Sounds like something that shouldn't be to hard to put together at the Nationals in Carlisle this June. Should be plenty of cars, cameras, and experts present.

According to the April, 1969 Dealer Ordering Information:

Horizontal bright bar - all RS cars

Vertical bright bars - All with Z21, and all non-RS SS cars.
