New '69 - tires
« on: April 24, 2016, 12:26:22 AM »
Just purchased a '69 RS, maybe SS, still to be determined. Very first thing I need to do is swap the wheels and tires. Going for the standard BFG T/A's on standard ralley wheels, as that has always been my favorite look on the '69, even though "everyone" has them.
From research I've done, was going to go with 215/60/15 on the front and 235/60/15 on the rear.  Just talked to my local tire shop that I like dealing with, and he said the 215's are hard to find. He could get 225's much easier.  So... my question is, do you think there will be any rubbing issues with the 225's?  I don't want any issues.  I know some guys go 245 on the rear, which i like the looks of the wider tire, but just going with 235's to be safe. Am I being too safe with the 235's?
I will have lots more question for this forum, so thanks in advance.

This is my second 1st gen, as I had a '68 a few years back.  Went the corvette route (3) and now back to my favorite muscle car. :)

Will post some pictures up later, as I am from Canada and have to import the car next week. (in storage across the border right now)

On the front of my 69 RS I have 215-65/15's on original 15x7 rallys.  BFG's are plentiful in that size.

On the rear I run 255-60/15's with plenty of clearance on 15x7 rallys.

Just have to watch the size on the front of an RS, and possibly rubbing the front vacuum actuator shields.  On a Z that sits lower it's tighter, on any other RS it may not be as they tend to sit a pinch higher.  Assuming the examples are set at stock ride height.

Welcome to the site!
I agree with (X33RS), I also would factor in what rally wheels you are going to run. Likely your car came with 14" wheels, but many guys run 15". Also many guys like to put 15 x 8 in the rear ( which wasn't available back then on the Camaro) and I think it looks a bit to deep, but will change the look vs a 15x 7 wheel with the same tire. I would suggest looking at some other camaros at the next show you go to and see what you like the look of. That way your only buying your wheels and tires once.

Just a thought. I've always used 14x7 ss wheels with 4" backspace, 235/60 on all four corners with no rub issues.

The 245/60-15 size fits fine on the back with the 15 x 7 Rally wheels. No issues at all. They actually can work on the front too but there are rather minor issues there.

Thanks guys.

I'm going with the 245/60/15's on the back and 215-65-15's on the front, all on 15x7 rims.

post a pic of your ride with the new wheels and tires when you get them mounted. :)
