3914660 block casting
« on: March 25, 2016, 11:35:11 PM »
I'm looking at a 1968 sbc engine with the partial vin of 781109579 and the application of v1004B5. I've  looked on Nasty and here but am having no luck with determining what the"B5" suffix relates to, anyone have an idea?

More than likely it's a marine block. Mercury Marine (among others) used a TON of Chevy engines in the 50's, 60's, 70's etc...

Can you post a clear picture?  And check the stamped numbers again.

Best I can tell it is most likely a 327.  Check the end of the crankshaft.

Here is the pic.  Generally a code like B5 would be marine or industrial, like Ed stated.

This one MAY have been in a car from the Oshawa, Ontario, Canada vehicle assembly plant.

The first digit in this case is a 7, which may be an error (probably should have been a 1).  But I think I have seen something similar to this before.
Second digit is an 8 - 1968.
Third digit is a 1 - Oshawa.
Next 6 digits (109579) would be the last 6 of the VIN of the vehicle it went into. Possibly a full size car or Chevelle.  Now notice I said POSSIBLY, because I have not been able to find a B5 application code.  I have asked around, and will continue to check myself.  If I find answer, I will post it.
