1969 SS350 Air Cleaner and Filter
« on: September 23, 2015, 02:07:06 PM »
I recently bought a "reconditioned original" air cleaner on ebay. I think it looks pretty close if its not actually original for a 350 4speed. I do welcome anyone telling me its not correct, that's ok and I do want to know. My question is on the A348C filter. The air cleaner came with an A348C filter with diamond mesh, but I see others with square mesh. Is there a thread on this already, I couldn't find it?
And can someone tell the the correct height the air cleaner bolt should extend out of the carb? This looks too high, but I can't get it down any further. I rebuilt the carb a few years ago and lost my pictures before removal (phone got washed in the washing machine).

And an aside, this forum has really come a long way. When I bought this camaro maybe 15 years ago, I read everything in CRG and all the books I could find but I don't remember this forum. I can't even start to tell you how much fun it is reading all of the threads.

Thanks - Andy

Actually it looks very good and original with the bright accents chrome top, and it's a correct configuration for a 4 speed car.

Original 4 speeds would have had the smog manifolds as mentioned above. Good looking automatic manifolds, though. Smogs will be pricey -

Change to a repro gas filter, too - the one in the car is slightly funky. Master cylinder is incorrect as well.

Otherwise, things look pretty good. Do the minor things and enjoy it -

Regards,
Steve

I believe the early air filters were square, and then later switched to the diamond design. So for your early 69 it probably left the factory with the square design.

Also I think your going to need to get a longer threaded air cleaner stud... ;D

Does it double as an antenna?  :o     (surprised it clears your hood)

Thanks Steve for your post! I have a few of those AC432 gas filters in my goodies garage, I just didn't want to put them on a dirty engine. But a big thank you on the master cylinder, I didn't remember pulling that off. On a restoration thread, I'm going to ask for suggestions on where to send it. I'm not worrying about the smog equipment unless I decide to restore the car for show. I'll probably restore the engine without smog and just accept the inconsistency. Unless of course anyone wants to sell me their smog and manifolds. :)

And thank you Austin for the confirmation on that air cleaner stud. I don't know why it won't go in any further, and yes i did close the hood very slowly a few times just to make sure it didn't dimple my hood. Maybe this is an undocumented RPO, short front antenna when coupled with rear antenna.

Thanks - Andy
